Eats Intro: Bon Chon Chicken / Cafe Soho

Sometimes you just need some good, spicy, fried chicken. (That's how I've been feeling all of the past week.) In that case, you can't go wrong with Bon Chon Chicken. I've heard about this out-of-world Korean fried chicken from our New York friend Theresa, but last weekend I tried it for the first time after C and I saw an article in the Inquirer that mentioned Cafe Soho, which sells it in our area.

You've never tasted hot wings like these before. They've been fried twice (which "minimizes the fat" according to the Bon Chon makers... that doesn't make much sense to me, but who cares? It tastes great!) so they fairly melt away as the special hot sauce pops in your mouth. I believe that the sauce is a derivative of the Korean hot sauce, go-choo-jang, so if you're familiar with that taste, you'll know what I'm talking about. You've got to try it at least once, if you consider yourself a hot wing connoisseur.

Here is the necessary info:

Cafe Soho
468 W. Cheltenham Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19126
215-224-6800

If you are ordering take-out, make sure you give them about 20-25 minutes to prep. (The restaurant, while nicely decorated in a hip, modern style, doesn't provide a waiting area--I'd make that a strong suggestion.) Price is a bit on the high side: $20 for a large order; $12 for small. But the chicken's worth it. Enjoy!
